Gold price history — the last 50 years

From $35/oz in 1971 to over $2,000/oz today — a look back.

1971 ended the gold standard. The dollar was no longer convertible into gold — the price could float freely.

The 1970s were a golden decade: inflation, oil crisis, Iran revolution drove the price from $35 to over $800/oz (1980).

After a long bear market, gold rose again from 2001 — financial crisis 2008, Euro crisis 2011, Covid 2020, inflation 2022. Today gold sits comfortably above $2,000/oz.
